Sustainable revolution.
Fast transportation, cross-border cooperation and a 50 percent modal split by 2030 for an environmentally friendly transformation of Europe.

The project aims to establish rail freight as a central part of a low-emission and resilient European logistics chain to fully meet the needs of end users.

By developing and demonstrating technologies in the clusters "Fully Digital Freight Train Operation (FDFTO)" and "Seamless Freight Operation" based on an integrated cross-sectoral approach, the aim is to achieve more efficient capacity, increased throughput and faster transports. Cross-border coordination and cooperation between rail infrastructure managers will also be strengthened. With 71 partners from the rail sector, including end users, industry partners, railroad companies, operators, wagon keepers, SMEs and academia, the project aims to increase the modal split share to 50 percent by 2030, break the link between economic growth and pollution in Europe and positively impact the quality of life of European citizens.

As part of this project, we are modifying our current digital information systems for freight forwarders and creating added value in the area of "seamless freight transport".

Central aspects
The three pillars of the project:
Higher throughput and shorter transport times.

Development, validation and demonstration of FP5 TRANS4M-R technologies and associated train functions and operational procedures leading to the following:

  • at least 40 percent reduction in train formation/release time
  • Train preparation time by at least 45 percent
  • Enable freight train compositions of up to 1500 meters
Maximizing the flexibility and reliability of rail freight services.

Reduce average transport time on the reference route by 10-20%

Reduce operational dwell time at borders and other transfer points by 50%

Reduce the number of additional operational stops (also to limit energy consumption) by 20%

Reduce processing/response time for ad-hoc cross-border route requests by 70%

Reduce processing/response time for connected comprehensive intermodal offers by at least 50%

Reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint by at least 10% through fewer stops at borders

Coping with demographic change.

With demographic change, not only is the average age of the workforce increasing, but there are also fewer people available for physically demanding work in yards, such as train preparation, coupling, uncoupling and other operational processes.

FP5-TRANS4M-R provides the necessary technologies for automation/digitalization of operational processes as well as instructions and guidelines to maximize the acceptance of the newly developed digital technologies.
